Project Profile

Robert Lewis Stevenson Middle School Science and Multi-Purpose Building Additions

Location: Honolulu, Hawaii

Stevenson Middle School is a signature Department of Education school that emphasizes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The curriculum strives to prepare students for college and careers in STEM fields. The Science and Multi-Purpose building additions satisfy the school’s growing need for capacity and technology.

These buildings included multiple classrooms for physical, biological, and earth/ space sciences, each of which is about 1,600 SF. Also, there are three prep rooms and two robotics classrooms. Multipurpose and utility rooms support the classrooms and lab spaces.

EEI provided design review and commissioning services for these buildings in compliance with LEED standards, though this project didn’t seek LEED certification. Our team uncovered several issues, including equipment failures, refrigerant leakage, and un-programmed lighting controls.

Our design review activities generally resulted in more robust systems and in clarifying Construction Documents in the interest of avoiding construction delays and change orders. Functional testing activities resulted in several improvements and deficiency corrections in the installation, set-up, and repair of mechanical systems. Ultimately, EEI identified 47 items for correction and clarification before turnover.
