In this Q&A, Ron Houston III, a Mechanical Support for EEI, shares the path that took him from studying Computer Science, Statistics, and Bioengineering at the University of New Hampshire to hands-on engineering work in the U.S. Navy and, ultimately, to EEI. He discusses why EEI stood out to him, what he’s learning as he grows into project leadership, and what excites him about the rapid evolution of data center infrastructure supporting AI. He also reflects on the skills he’s focused on building next and where he hopes to take his career in the coming years.
Q. What did you study and can you share the experiences that led you into building performance and energy efficiency work?
I originally studied Computer Science, Statistics, and Bioengineering at the University of New Hampshire. Enthralled by the technical challenge and limitless nature of the engineering discipline, but unsure of what to pursue, I joined the U.S. Navy as a machinist mate on nuclear submarines. There, I gained significant experience during a major modernization period that encompassed the installation, testing, and operation of air and fluid systems. I thoroughly enjoyed owning a part of the process of bringing systems to life and wanted to do more of it.
Q. Why did you choose to work at EEI?
I joined EEI as a Mechanical Support for the Mission Critical team in South Bend, IN and was attracted to the emphasis the company had on the development and well-being of its team members. That sentiment was reinforced during my early months and continues to be a driving factor in my dedication to relentless growth. Now that I am managing a project, I am determined to ensure team members have the tools and information required to succeed.
Q. What are you most excited about working on or learning in your role at EEI?
The world of AI is exploding, and the infrastructure required to support its growth seems limitless. In just a year of being in the Data Center industry, I’ve seen a plethora of changes that challenge the standard and encourage a different way of thinking every day. I’m most excited about this continuous advancement. Each day brings a new challenge and a new opportunity to learn.
Q. How do you see your career developing here over the next few years?
My focus will be on technical aptitude and becoming a master of my craft. A management role has allowed me to develop vital communication and presentation skills for professional confidence that I will continue to improve. Although mechanical by trade, I’ve gained significant interest in electrical systems and look forward to increasing my knowledge base and project versatility.
Q. Where would you like to be professionally in five years?
As a change-seeker, I’m continuously looking to expand my abilities and push my comfort zone. EEI is growing and I want to be at the forefront of that trajectory. Whether that’s participating in new projects, expanding into new roles, or developing and refining processes, I’d like to test the boundaries of what we as a company think is possible and spread that mentality among my peers.
Q. What is a fun fact about you?
I have written and composed a song.
