Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Hospital

Location: Columbus, OH

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is developing a new inpatient hospital, set to open in early 2026, which will significantly enhance healthcare delivery, research, and medical education. This 1.9 million square foot facility, costing $1.9 billion, is the largest single project ever undertaken at Ohio State.

The new hospital will include:

  • Up to 820 private patient rooms, a substantial increase from the 440 beds in older facilities
  • State-of-the-art diagnostic, treatment, and inpatient service areas
  • 51 neonatal intensive care unit bassinets
  • Advanced imaging and operating rooms
  • Integration with existing medical center buildings

The project goals encompass pioneering new techniques in medical science, conducting cutting-edge research, elevating patient-centered care, and enhancing clinical training for future healthcare providers.

Commissioning Process

Engineering Economics, Inc. (EEI) has been tasked with managing the commissioning process during the design and construction phases.  Their responsibilities include:

  • Conducting monitor-based commissioning throughout the project
  • Performing automated functional testing
  • Commissioning mechanical, electrical, life safety, and plumbing systems
  • Managing Building Envelope Commissioning (BECx) and Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing (TAB)

Impact and Significance

This project is expected to have a significant economic impact on the region while advancing Ohio State’s mission in healthcare and education.  The new facility will provide improved spaces for clinical training, integration of advanced technology, optimized spaces for patient care, and enhanced overall quality of healthcare delivery and medical education in Columbus and surrounding areas.

Problem Resolution Example

This case study also presents a specific problem-solving scenario involving hot water distribution on a floor.  The issue was initially thought to be due to air in the lines or blockages in the heating hot water system.  

The resolution process:

  1. Initial investigation by floor-level mechanical contractors and balancers
  2. Involvement of riser subcontractor and construction manager to access obstructed valves
  3. Identification of a blocked-off main riser and lower pressure in the return side
  4. Further troubleshooting by floor-level mechanical contractors, controls contractor, and balancers
  5. Implementation of a collaborative approach with daily meetings and involvement of the commissioning team

This systematic approach ensured clear communication and coordination between different teams, demonstrating the importance of collaborative problem-solving in complex construction and commissioning processes.  

By focusing on patient safety, comfort, and energy efficiency, the commissioning process aims to ensure that this state-of-the-art facility meets the highest standards of performance and care delivery, aligning with the project’s overall goals of advancing healthcare and medical education.
