EEI is providing LEED v4 Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning services for the Columbus Airport Midfield Expansion project, a comprehensive $2 billion initiative to replace the existing terminal at John Glenn International Airport. The new terminal, designed by Gensler in collaboration with Columbus-based Moody Nolan and supported by Heapy and KLS Engineers, will span 994,246 SF across two levels plus a mezzanine. This state-of-the-art facility aims to enhance traveler experience, improve inter-gate foot traffic, and streamline security checkpoints.
The project scope includes a spacious 36-gate terminal with 20-foot ceilings, a central marketplace, and a single consolidated security checkpoint to improve efficiency. Additional features comprise a pedestrian bridge connecting to the rental car center, a new 5,000-space parking garage, and expanded concession areas. The design also incorporates a 50,000 square foot Public Safety Building and considers plans for a logistics building. Sustainability is a key focus, with the project pursuing LEED certification through both Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning services compliant with LEED v4.
EEI’s commissioning scope will cover various building systems, including HVAC, lighting controls, domestic hot water, and electrical service distribution. In addition to listed systems, we are have a building envelope consultant providing Cx of the building enclosure. The process will involve thorough design reviews, development of the Owner’s Project Requirements (OPR), and verification of systems installation and performance. Construction is expected to begin in early 2025, with the new terminal slated to open by early 2029. This expansion will significantly increase the airport’s capacity, preparing it to serve over 13 million passengers annually and positioning Columbus with a world- class airport facility for future growth.
