The James Cancer Hospital at The Ohio State University is a state-of-the-art facility that stands as one of the world’s 25 tallest hospitals and the third-largest cancer hospital in the United States. Named after its founder, Arthur G. James, this 21-story, 1.1-million-square-foot facility houses 306 beds and serves as both a treatment center and a hub for cancer research.
Initially aiming for LEED Silver certification with a goal of 20% energy savings above current energy codes, the project surpassed expectations and achieved LEED Gold certification in 2015. This accomplishment highlights the hospital’s commitment to sustainability, with features such as garden terraces, rainwater runoff catch basins, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and the use of renewable materials like bamboo for interiors. The project’s success was further recognized when it received the 2015 Associated General Contractors of Ohio’s Award for New Construction over $100 Million.
EEI played a crucial role in the commissioning process, overseeing the MEP and specialized systems, including automated guided vehicles, vertical transportation, life safety systems, and an FDA-validated suite. The commissioning team worked closely with the MEP engineer to address site-specific challenges, such as radiant panel piping issues, operating room VAV box control problems, and building pressure imbalances resulting from campus-wide pressure issues and stack effect. EEI’s expertise in managing FDA validation contracts for the Good Manufacturing Protocol suite and medical gas certification further contributed to the project’s overall success and compliance with stringent healthcare facility standards.
