Q&A with William Grogan, Team Leader, Senior Project Manager

EEI Building Performance recently welcomed William Grogan as Team Leader, Senior Project Manager, bringing more than 21 years of experience in building technologies, controls, automation and client service to the firm. In his new role, Grogan will help lead complex technical projects, support client relationships and strengthen EEI’s delivery of high-value engineering solutions. His background spans healthcare, higher education, school districts, airports, military bases, government installations and mission-critical data centers, giving him a broad perspective on the evolving needs of building owners and operators. In the following Q&A, Grogan shares what drew him to EEI, how he approaches leadership and client service, and the building performance trends he is most excited about.

  1. You bring more than 20 years of experience in building technologies, controls, automation and client service. What drew you to EEI Building Performance at this point in your career?

After more than two decades in building technologies and controls, I was drawn to EEI’s outstanding reputation for technical excellence, its employee-owned culture, and its commitment to client success. EEI operates with a high level of agility and dedication to long-term building performance. I wanted to join a growth-oriented team where I could leverage my experience to help drive high-value engineering solutions and support our clients’ operational goals.

  1. What experiences from your previous leadership roles do you think will be most valuable as you step into your new role as Team Leader, Senior Project Manager?

Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to lead complex projects across diverse verticals including healthcare, higher education, school districts, airports, military bases, government installations, and mission-critical data centers. Having navigated large-scale infrastructure deployments and owner representative dynamics across these environments, I’ve learned that technical success comes down to alignment, rigorous project controls, and holding ourselves to a high standard of excellence. My focus is on bridging high-level client business objectives with disciplined, on-the-ground engineering execution.

  1. Building technology is evolving quickly. What trends or opportunities are you most excited about when it comes to helping clients improve building performance?

As a lifelong tech enthusiast, I’m fascinated by how rapidly building technology, smart analytics, and automation are evolving. I’m particularly excited about the convergence of real-time fault detection and diagnostics (FDD), continuous commissioning, and intelligent controls integration. Technology now allows us to look at building performance dynamically in real time, helping owners optimize energy efficiency, lower operating costs, and extend asset life through proactive, data-driven insights.

  1. How would you describe your approach to leading teams and supporting clients through complex technical challenges?

My approach is grounded in servant leadership, clear communication, and holding myself and my team to a high standard of excellence. For our team, I focus on empowering engineers and project managers with the resources, clarity, and backing they need to perform at their best. For clients, complex technical challenges are best solved by listening first, translating technical complexity into clear business decisions, and maintaining absolute accountability from initial assessment through long-term operation.

  1. On a more personal note, what is one thing people might not know about you outside of work?

Outside of work, I’m a technical tinkerer at heart and I love experimenting with new software tools, developing, and building tech projects on the side. When I’m not working, I like going offroad on Colorado’s 4×4 trails and exploring the mountains with my family.
