Project Profile

UW Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology

Location: Seattle, Washington

The University of Washington (UW) Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) is undertaking a major centralization project to consolidate operations into a new state-of-the-art facility. The project involves relocating laboratory groups from multiple existing DLMP locations into a single building with approximately 200,000 rentable square feet over five floors. The design focuses on maximizing modularization, flexibility, and efficiency to support DLMP’s mission.

The project scope encompasses all phases from design through construction, closeout, and post-occupancy. Key elements include design and pre-construction services, phased construction to accommodate transition from multiple sites, commissioning of laboratory systems and equipment, and closeout and post-occupancy testing/reporting. Engineering Economics, Inc. has been contracted as the commissioning agent to verify and document performance of the facility’s systems and equipment.

Their commissioning scope includes developing and executing a commissioning plan, facilitating commissioning meetings and reporting progress, performing site observations and corrective action tracking, reviewing factory testing and developing checklists/test procedures, system readiness reviews and startup verification, and functional performance testing across all major systems such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, BAS/BMS, lab gases, environmental health and safety equipment, and BSL-2/3 lab certification and commissioning. The commissioning process aims to validate system performance efficiently while ensuring the new DLMP facility meets all operational requirements.
